In late September an assignment for People Magazine took me to the small town of Gila Bend, Arizona. The premise was to photograph where Prince Harry would be staying during his visit for military training in October. Gila Bend is a small town in the desert off Highway 8 between Tucson and San Diego. It is home to a United States Air Force Base and is a regular training place for Allied Foreign troops.

Other than the Air Force Base there just isn’t a whole lot there. The town only has three restaurants, one bar and doesn’t even have a grocery store. It has several hotels including the somewhat well known Space Age Inn that carries a UFO theme throughout.

Most of my editorial work involves photographing people and places but rarely empty spaces. This project was about showing how different the area is than where Prince Harry comes from in England and capturing the personality of the town.

We spent the day on base and around town gathering photographs and some on camera interviews with the local people. Many of whom were very friendly but seemed unconcerned with a visiting celebrity who would be third in line as the king of England.

The Omnia Hotel in Zermatt, Switzerland is my favorite hotel in Europe. Why have I singled it out? Well it’s the experience of staying at the hotel that I remember, but I can’t forget the place because of their amazing promotional pieces that keep showing up year after year.

My experience with The Omnia began in 2007 when my wife and I spent 2 weeks traveling throughout Switzerland via train. We stayed in Zermatt and at The Omnia over a weekend in October. It was definitely one of my favorite places that we stayed on the trip.

The hotel is a modern mountain lodge built into the foothills of The Matterhorn in Zermatt. The village of Zermatt is only accessible by train and cars are prohibited in the village. Visitors get around on foot, horse-drawn carriages or electric carts.

You enter the hotel from a cave/tunnel in the village and take an elevator 4 floors up through the rock to the lobby where the view overlooks the village. An added touch to the intimate feel and personal experience of the place is the fact that the rooms are lettered A-Z and not numbered.

As a past guest of the hotel, each year I receive a promotional piece from the hotel. The esthetic of the pieces are amazing with the design, photography and illustration completely planned down to the smallest detail.

I’ve included a few samples of their promo pieces from photos I created as well a photo collage from their site (above). I also included a few of my own shots, first photo is a view of the town from the hotel and below is a self-portrait from the balcony overlooking the mountains. Check out The Omnia website.

I am excited to present an advertising campaign that I recently photographed. The campaign is for American Railway Explorer, a company that offers luxury train excursions across the United States and Canada. The tour packages will be starting in summer 2011. The campaign just launched in website and brochure form with creative direction by Arizona based agency E.B. Lane.

The final images were shot in two parts: I photographed a number of different models in studio to compliment scenic shots sourced from stock. In addition to the creative work done by E.B. Lane, the post-production and retouching was orchestrated by Randy Geske. Below are a few shots of the brochure and the website is live… Check it out here.

In an earlier post I mentioned traveling to Salt Lake City, Utah in March for a shoot for Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine. The assignment was to photograph a couple who had recently purchased a house for an article about the fluctuating housing markets around the country.

I wanted to share some photos from the trip that weren’t published and give a timeline for the events of a travel day while shooting for a national editorial client.

Thursday March 11, 2010
Pack gear at the studio including: laptop, cameras, lighting kit and bag for additional lighting gear. In order to avoid incurring addtional baggage fees I flew Southwest and had to insure that all bags were under 50lbs.

Friday March 12, 2010
4:15 am – wake up
5:00 am – leave for airport
5:15 am – arrive at airport, print boarding pass, check bags, get in security line

5:45 am – get coffee at Starbucks on the way to the gate
6:00 am – board SWA direct flight to Salt Lake City
6:40 am – flight leaves Phoenix
7:10 am – fly over Grand Canyon
7:45 am – fly over Bingham Canyon Mine, the largest open-pit mine in the world

8:15 am – land in Salt Lake City
8:45 am – get rental car
9:30 am – return emails at coffee shop in downtown Salt Lake City
10:15 am – leave downtown driving south on Interstate 15
11:00 am - lunch with my friend Brian Smith in Bluffdale, Utah
12:00 pm – meet assistant Reed Rowe at Brian’s studio, load light stands/sandbags
1:00 pm - met subjects, setup and start shooting

4:00 pm – wrap up shooting, we shot 5 setups in 3 hours with the subjects at their home in Crescent, Utah.
4:30 pm – meet back at Brian’s studio to drop off light stands/sandbags
5:00 pm – drive back to SLC, fill car up with gas, return rental car
6:00 pm – dinner at the airport, backup files onto extra hard drive
7:50 pm – non-stop flight back to Phoenix
9:45 pm – arrive back in Phoenix
10:30 pm – home

So it ended up being an 18 hour day that included 3 hours of shooting, 3 hours of flying an hour of driving and a lot of waiting. Thanks to Reed for the assistance and Brian for the extra gear, good to catch up with you my friend.

And below is the final published image in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, May 2010 issue.
