TIme Magazine: Vocational Education
Last week I photographed an assignment in Northern Arizona and Phoenix for Time Magazine. The article is in this weeks edition spanning 4 pages (34-37). Nice to see a great layout featuring some of my favorites from the assignment.

People Magazine: Looking for absent royalty in Gila Bend
In late September an assignment for People Magazine took me to the small town of Gila Bend, Arizona. The premise was to photograph where Prince Harry would be staying during his visit for military training in October. Gila Bend is a small town in the desert off Highway 8 between Tucson and San Diego. It is home to a United States Air Force Base and is a regular training place for Allied Foreign troops.

Other than the Air Force Base there just isn’t a whole lot there. The town only has three restaurants, one bar and doesn’t even have a grocery store. It has several hotels including the somewhat well known Space Age Inn that carries a UFO theme throughout.

Most of my editorial work involves photographing people and places but rarely empty spaces. This project was about showing how different the area is than where Prince Harry comes from in England and capturing the personality of the town.

We spent the day on base and around town gathering photographs and some on camera interviews with the local people. Many of whom were very friendly but seemed unconcerned with a visiting celebrity who would be third in line as the king of England.

The St. Francis Hotel in Santa Fe
A few shots from a recent stay at the St. Francis Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I loved the minimal rustic modern theme to the hotel that sits right on the square in downtown Santa Fe.

The Omnia in Zermatt, my favorite hotel in Europe
The Omnia Hotel in Zermatt, Switzerland is my favorite hotel in Europe. Why have I singled it out? Well it’s the experience of staying at the hotel that I remember, but I can’t forget the place because of their amazing promotional pieces that keep showing up year after year.

My experience with The Omnia began in 2007 when my wife and I spent 2 weeks traveling throughout Switzerland via train. We stayed in Zermatt and at The Omnia over a weekend in October. It was definitely one of my favorite places that we stayed on the trip.

The hotel is a modern mountain lodge built into the foothills of The Matterhorn in Zermatt. The village of Zermatt is only accessible by train and cars are prohibited in the village. Visitors get around on foot, horse-drawn carriages or electric carts.

You enter the hotel from a cave/tunnel in the village and take an elevator 4 floors up through the rock to the lobby where the view overlooks the village. An added touch to the intimate feel and personal experience of the place is the fact that the rooms are lettered A-Z and not numbered.

As a past guest of the hotel, each year I receive a promotional piece from the hotel. The esthetic of the pieces are amazing with the design, photography and illustration completely planned down to the smallest detail.

I’ve included a few samples of their promo pieces from photos I created as well a photo collage from their site (above). I also included a few of my own shots, first photo is a view of the town from the hotel and below is a self-portrait from the balcony overlooking the mountains. Check out The Omnia website.

American Railway Explorer campaign
I am excited to present an advertising campaign that I recently photographed. The campaign is for American Railway Explorer, a company that offers luxury train excursions across the United States and Canada. The tour packages will be starting in summer 2011. The campaign just launched in website and brochure form with creative direction by Arizona based agency E.B. Lane.

The final images were shot in two parts: I photographed a number of different models in studio to compliment scenic shots sourced from stock. In addition to the creative work done by E.B. Lane, the post-production and retouching was orchestrated by Randy Geske. Below are a few shots of the brochure and the website is live… Check it out here.

in-flight, enRoute Magazine…
If you are flying Air Canada this month, brush past the barf-bag and grab that copy of enRoute Magazine in the pouch in front of you. I have some work featured on page 28 of the May 2010 edition. There are several photos of Scottsdale for the ‘Dans Ma Rue” section. EnRoute is the in-flight magazine of Air Canada and is published monthly.

Travel days: on assignment for a national magazine
In an earlier post I mentioned traveling to Salt Lake City, Utah in March for a shoot for Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine. The assignment was to photograph a couple who had recently purchased a house for an article about the fluctuating housing markets around the country.

I wanted to share some photos from the trip that weren’t published and give a timeline for the events of a travel day while shooting for a national editorial client.
Running with the bulls, in Utah?
Last week I traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah for an editorial shoot for Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. After the shoot I came across a scene that was completely unrelated to the shoot, but I thought was interesting….

It was a quick day trip for the shoot and the story for the magazine will be published in May. I will post tearsheets here after the magazine hits newsstands.

Archive: San Francisco
I am starting to mix in some old photos to the blog from my archive. Most of these are going to be photos that I like but have never really used for portfolio or currently don’t have in my book. The following images were shot in 2008 on a trip to San Francisco. These images are available for licensing in the online archive: San Francisco
